Ohhhhh, a sell of just before the court case! How strange!

Would this mean that WCC have to re tender the contract, as it has gone to another company?

"Campaigners have challenged a controversial scheme to charge for bike parking.

The news comes as it was revealed motorbike parking scheme will make a loss of more than £430,000 this year.

Westminster Council budget papers, seen by Labour councillors, revealed that projected income from the scheme is expected to be £2,022,594, but expenditure is predicted to be £2,453,094, resulting in a loss to the council of £430,500."

Knobcheese Chalkley claims scooters and motorbikes are putting pressure on the roads and bringing London to a standstill by contributing to congestion, by the looks of this.

Do you know if that letter went into the published West End Extra?  I seem to have trouble getting hold of a copy, these days!  If so, has anyone written a reply to hopefully go into this week's paper (in addition to the great on-line comments)?

"But the council said parking charges were not meant to be revenue raisers. City management chief, Cllr Danny Chalkley said: "The introduction of motorcycle parking charges is not about revenue raising, it is about dealing with the increasing pressures on our roads and ensuring the city does not grind to a standstill"

WTF... I'm at a loss to understand this man, and his crazy, unfounded, think of something quick-and say it,  statements.

I will have a look later and let you know. I was also having a bit of trouble finding a copy lately so I emailed distribution@CamdenNewJournal.co.uk and they informed me of a place near me where I can grab a copy.

Just so you know, the letter that Chalkley was referring to was published on page two of the previous weeks West End Extra (I was going to scan it but the article is online so I didn't bother in the end).

Ogri, as I cannot access youtube via work PC, any chance you can paraphrase what he said then (& when was it)?
I would love to include as many *different* official WCC / Chalkley quotes as to what this Tax is about, in any letter!!

14th December 2008. BBC London News, interview to camera:

"There is a cost to the council in introducing the additional 2000 spaces we have created for motorcyclists.
We've responded to the demand that's been placed on us in Westminster by the additional bikes that come in; we think about 16,000 every single day, so we need to obviously regenerate that investment."

Thanks, Orgi - that's brilliant - it totally disproves that it's about kerb space or congestion, or .. NOT all about the money!!

Martin, sorry for not getting back to you last night. I just checked and it was printed on the letters page (page 6).

Thought this may be of interest, protest ride in France and some interesting questions posed, in light of upcoming elections.
